New Yard and New Plants

So its Spring time in my new yard and I'm surrounded by plant books trying to figure out what everything is as it peeps up from the ground. From what I can tell, I'm not the first plant lover to live in my house and I think I'm in for an education on new varieties and cultivars. The great thing about the house (in addition to some wonderful plants) is neighbors who've been here since the 70s and 80s and know what most everything is. Some of the plants they even planted in my yard or shared with the previous owners. A few neighbors have enlightened me on things I was having a hard time identifying. Here's what we found:
  • In the back yard, I have one loner Pulmonaria (or lung wort). From my quick study, its a deep shade lover that likes water and will bloom this Spring. Works for me! I can't wait to see it in action next year!
  • My front bed, is loaded with Spider wort. Mine is in full sun in a front bed and so far, the blooms are purple and white. They are AM bloomers and close up for the night around noon. They must reseed, because I've got plants coming up everywhere.
  • The May Apple boasts giant shiney leaves that produces delicate blooms in May. Parts of it are extremely toxic. This plants also called: devil's apple, hog-apple and indian apple.
  • Bletilla - An orchid that is hot pick (one of my favorites).
  • Asarum - Wild Ginger
  • Baptisia (or False Indigo)
  • Mallow
  • Platycodon grandiflorus (Balloon Flower or Chinese Bellflower) - A "true blue" bloomer for sun.
I've still got a few "mystery plants" and I think only time will help me identify them.

Happy Gardening!
